JIM SHANOR, HIStory

History is his thing. Has been for awhile now. At 75, Jim Shanor has spent more than half his life collecting and preserving local history. Fittingly, he has been president of the Little Beaver Historical Society for the past 2 years and a board member for 9 years. He also conducts history tours at the sugar shack at the Annual Maple Syrup Festival in Bradys Run, where he also volunteered for the past 30 years. He also gives tours at the Darlington Museums.
He also collects history. Shanor has more than 100 Antique Bottles same number of oil lamps more than 200 hand wood planes, and countless old pieces which are on loan to museums, including an 1890 high wheeler bicycle which was manufactured in West Mayfield.
But his passion by far is antique carriages and sleighs. Of the 30 he owns, his favorite is an 1880 C.P. Kimball, a specialty wagon made in Chicago. Shanor is the third owner. This Carriage was used in the Arizona Governor's Inauguration before the turn of the 19th century. Shanor has been active in the Jaycees civic organization for decades. He's held many offices in the organization, rising to his current position as JC International Senator and United States ambassador.
Shanor lives in South Beaver with his wife Diane they have two children, a son and a daughter, who now live in North Carolina.

BILL GRIFFIN

2/19/1960-9/10/2016

BILL GRIFFIN (FEB 19, 1960-SEPT 10, 2016)

Those of you that have crossed the path of William Oren Griffin, but never had the pleasure to know this little guy, I'd would like to take a moment to share with you a few things about this gift from God.

First, even gifts from God can have faults-and believe me; the little guy has his share.  I will list a few of these faults so that you all will know he is just one of us, no more and certainly no less.

Ok, Bill likes quarters.  If there are quarters lying around your house when he comes to visit, there won't be when he leaves.

Here is another one, if Bill tells you he likes your ball cap, don't take it off and hang it where he can see it.  Are you starting to get the picture?

One more, just to make sure you don't get the idea that he is worthy of sainthood.  Bill is thought to have gone through his sisters checkbook, practice writing checks and disposing of them and then taking a check that he deemed satisfactory to the local market in town.  The store employee's, who know Bill quite well, recognized something was not quite right and sent him on his way.  Bill decided that he would give it another shot, the big time; he would test his scheme,  AT THE BANK!  The bank saw right through his little scheme, called his sister who he lives with and busted him.  (he signed the check bill and the L's were backwards).

Ok, enough of his faults, although I could go on and on.  I will list only one trait of the little guy that erases all of the failings.  This gift that Bill is blessed with is so subtle that most are not even conscious of it.  To me, Bill is like a runner who enters a marathon knowing that he will never make the finish line (adulthood).  His purpose in entering that race is to allow all the other runners to race by, and just when they get close enough he reaches out and ever so gently touches their soul.  You see, Bill has the gift to show us all what would surely make us better people.  All we have to do is take a moment, just a few fleeting seconds, and take what he is so unselfishly offering-his unconditional kindness.

Thanks Bill.
