2022 GRAND MARSHALL

BRIAN FARKAS

Social Studies teacher at Beaver Falls High School ; 2001 graduate of Blackhawk High School, Bachelor of Science in Education from Clarion University, Master of Arts in Political Science from University of Pittsburgh.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: President of Darlington Township Volunteer Fire Department since 2007. Member of DTVFD since 1997 as a junior firefighter and 2001 as a firefighter, captain since 2015. Member of Fairview Grange, in Ohioville, also member of the Grange Executive Committee, and treasurer of the Fairview Grange auction. Board of Directors, Blackhawk Federal Credit Union. Longtime MC of Darlington Days Parade and the public address voice of the Beaver Falls Tigers.

When did you first get involved in the community and why? I suppose it started with the Junior Grange, which I got involved in because my Aunt Em insisted, then continuing with the fire department. I joined the fire department in order to build my resume and because I figured it would look good on college applications. At this point, that is no longer a consideration so there must be some other motivation. Just like the trash pickup on Cannelton Road, familial obligation only explains so much.

2023 GRAND MARSHALL

VELMA LUND

We are honored to announce this years Grand Marshal, Velma Lund, A Darlington resident that has loved her town, given to her town and shared her town with her friends and family over the last 60 years of their residency here. Her granddaughter shared this short bio of her.

Velma Lund was born and raised in Arkansas, but a resident of Darlington for 60 years. When Velma married her husband Howard Lund, he had just begun a job at the Darlington Brickyard in the labs as a Ceramic Engineer. Howard continued working at the Brickyard until 1986 when he retired. The couple spent retirement together and enjoyed their children and grandchildren every moment they could. Velma spent many years as a stay at home mother, but did work at the Geriatric Center in Beaver, PA for some time and found time to volunteer for her church’s various outreach ministries. Velma had a love for music and played piano at her church for services and holiday gatherings. Her husband Howard passed away October of 2006. Velma has called Darlington home for now 60 years and has lived in the same home on the backstreet where her and her husband was blessed to raise 4 children, Naomi (Steve) Crymble, Diane (Mike) DePaolis, David (Denise) Lund, Rachel (Brian) Conley. Velma loved sharing Darlington with their children, 16 grandchildren and now the 13 great-grandchildren. She loves her walks around town, to visit the museums and enjoy every part of Darlington Days with them. If you drive by you just might find Velma outside spending time in her garden and numerous flowerbeds.

Thank you Velma for being you and raising such a great family here in our town.

BILL GRIFFIN

2/19/1960-9/10/2016

BILL GRIFFIN (FEB 19, 1960-SEPT 10, 2016)

Those of you that have crossed the path of William Oren Griffin, but never had the pleasure to know this little guy, I'd would like to take a moment to share with you a few things about this gift from God.

First, even gifts from God can have faults-and believe me; the little guy has his share. I will list a few of these faults so that you all will know he is just one of us, no more and certainly no less.

Ok, Bill likes quarters. If there are quarters lying around your house when he comes to visit, there won't be when he leaves.

Here is another one, if Bill tells you he likes your ball cap, don't take it off and hang it where he can see it. Are you starting to get the picture?

One more, just to make sure you don't get the idea that he is worthy of sainthood. Bill is thought to have gone through his sisters checkbook, practice writing checks and disposing of them and then taking a check that he deemed satisfactory to the local market in town. The store employee's, who know Bill quite well, recognized something was not quite right and sent him on his way. Bill decided that he would give it another shot, the big time; he would test his scheme, AT THE BANK! The bank saw right through his little scheme, called his sister who he lives with and busted him. (he signed the check bill and the L's were backwards).

Ok, enough of his faults, although I could go on and on. I will list only one trait of the little guy that erases all of the failings. This gift that Bill is blessed with is so subtle that most are not even conscious of it. To me, Bill is like a runner who enters a marathon knowing that he will never make the finish line (adulthood). His purpose in entering that race is to allow all the other runners to race by, and just when they get close enough he reaches out and ever so gently touches their soul. You see, Bill has the gift to show us all what would surely make us better people. All we have to do is take a moment, just a few fleeting seconds, and take what he is so unselfishly offering-his unconditional kindness.

Thanks Bill.
